Why is there such big hate for the gambling industry?
I’m not talking about the few black sheep. Which there definitely are!
I’m talking about the whole iGaming industry in general.
Being at @casinobeats got me thinking.
Interestingly, whenever the topic comes to gambling the whole conversation immediately becomes emotionally charged.
Though pretty much no one actually knows any gambling addicts personally!
While everyone knows at least of few people with problematic drinking issues, or who finish a full pack of cigarettes daily, or maybe even both at the same time.
Why is that not talked about more? Is it because the effects are delayed? Gambling addiction bankrupts you quickly, whereas drinking and smoking don’t kill you instantly.
Whereas with gambling, only one person’s or one family’s life is ruined, for drinking and smoking related health issues the whole society has to pay. The reaction to it is reversed though.
In Denmark for example, there are around 20,000 problematic gamblers in total, while every year 20,000 people die there from smoking-related cancer alone.
The gambling industry in Germany has a €2.5 billion revenue in 2022, while beer alone has €22 billion.
In Germany and Austria (and in most other countries too), there’s no KYC for the state-owned lottery, while you can play from 16 years old and with no regulation on max amounts. Together with huge ads for sth like “€50 million – the Jackpot of a lifetime” – which online casinos couldn’t do.
Why not work on the reasons for gambling addiction? Mental health, crumbling life costs, and being without any positive outlook for one’s life being the biggest!
Why not check that the biggest demographic is being looked after? Young, lower class men that have been/feel left behind.
Why not invest the time that goes into regulations and the money from the taxes into actual responsible gaming initiatives? State-funded AI assisted on site tracking, for example.
Why is this industry hit with harsh regulations, especially in Germany, for the sake of a few?
