🧔 Wanna know what the leading cause of death is among men under 50?
“Men’s Mental Health Month” is just over and I believe most of you didn’t even know.
Coincidentally, this has been one of the most stressful months for me in years.
I never understood why they had to decide on June for this when it was already “Pride Month” since the 70s. Raising awareness for one problem should not overshadow raising awareness for another problem. But that’s not the point of this post…
Let me answer the above with statistics.
The biggest killer of men under 50 is suicide, and nearly 3/4 of all suicides are men.
We live in a world where the ratio of 1:3 of female to male suicide rates is normal. In some countries, it’s even 1:30.
😶 Yes, one to thirty!
We live in a world where the words “toxic masculinity” are thrown around like candy at a German carnival.
Just being a man is communicated as something harmful. Your pure existence is threatening to some people.
I can already see how a lot of women are now thinking, “But what about our struggles?”
Look, as much as I understand your struggles, this isn’t about you. While it indirectly also is.
Men and boys have always been told to “Suck it up.” And yes, also by women.
The fix has always been to apply even more pressure.
Times are changing, but not really. I still know many men younger than me who simply can’t communicate any feelings at all.
Probably even the majority when I truly look around.
A lot of times they don’t even dare to open up to their partners!
I heard @rainnwilson recently say, “How do you want to build resilience without pain and suffering?”
And while I absolutely agree, most men go through life suffering in silence for fear of being seen as weak.
Here’s the thing:
I’d rather have a man cry on my shoulder than me crying a week later carrying his coffin!
So, dear men, please learn to open up. And if it has to be a third person, like a therapist, then go see a therapist.
Dear women, if your man opens up to you, be truly supportive!
