???? Why is work culture so important to me?
First of all, I went through crap jobs and crap teams myself, and I wouldn’t want to wish that on anybody else.
And secondly, a team that is in tune produces great outcomes. Which my teams do… ????
A while ago, I gave an interview to the Foreign Policy magazine on “How to Detoxify Your Work Culture to Help Your Business Thrive”
As I mentioned in my last post – just scroll back a bit – it’s important to me what type of person I add to my teams.
And just as much as it’s crucial that we share the same values, it’s even more crucial that I, and also you, don’t add any toxic people.
@simonsinek talks about the Seal Team 6 process on how they choose new members. Where there’s an X-Y-diagram of low to high trust and low to high performance.
He has a whole speech about it. Seriously, check it out!
When I was still a basketball coach, I subconsciously followed the same approach.
I’d rather want to hire someone who’s not yet a great performer but someone whom I feel I can fully trust! ????
See, most companies have it backward. They hire only for performance.
Yes, performance is important, especially if you strive for excellence, but the “only” part is important here!
Corporations often want high performance (get the job done now) over anything else. Part of the reason is that public corporations are only looking at quarterly reporting.
Hence, they only hire or promote people who produce high results, regardless of the internal costs.
But the Navy Seals would label them as toxic!
It’s easier to measure performance than trust. With performance, it’s easy to check the box. Was the goal met or exceeded? Was it done on or ahead of schedule? Easy to measure and identify.
Does the person generate trust within their team? Hard to predict.
But trust is the only thing that keeps your team together. It’s the oil that keeps the machine running. ????
If you don’t trust me, then at least trust the best special forces in the world.
How would you hire? And how would you implement trust in your hiring process?
